Build Sustainable Communities - Cambodia

HUSK for Communities

WHAT THEY DO
Husk is a non-profit organization working to improve the lives of families in Siem Reap, Cambodia, by generating sustainable solutions to very real everyday issues.  By working daily alongside community members within two Cambodian villages, and by understanding the villages and their needs on an intimate level, HUSK is able to create real long-term solutions to combat extreme poverty. HUSK runs a broad range of programs that focus on the basic needs of villagers – food & nutrition, clean water, shelter, sanitation, and education – all with vocational learning opportunities.  It's difficult to summarize all of the great work that they do.  Some of these beneficial programs are highlighted here:

Eco-Building:  Recycling and reducing landfill by reusing clean water bottles filled with 'clean' fill (i.e., paper, plastic, polystyrene , in place of traditional building blocks.  HUSK delivers empty bottles to the villages each week, while also collecting ones that have been filled by community members who are paid in rewards for their work.  Rewards include bags of rice, school uniforms, schoolbooks, and bicycles.

Education:  The Kompheim School was built using the eco-building technique, and began classes for primary grades in October of 2012.  Education is the first step to a successful future, and with government school offered for only a few hours each morning, this new school offers extended education for students.  HUSK supplies course materials for each student, as well as rewards for families who are able to have their children attend 90% of classes.  With such a need for kids to work the fields, or hunt frogs for dinner, the rice rewards are a significant, and very real, compliment to understanding the needs of the families.

Sustainable Village Programs:  Access to sustainable and regular income can be one of the most challenging aspects of life for village families.  The "Softies" program, started in 2012, offers an opportunity for women within the villages to learn new skills, and put those skills to real-time work.  Softies are adorable 'stuffed animals', each with their own character, and hand-woven by the women who have interviewed for this position.  They are currently being sold in shops in Cambodia, Australia, Hong Kong, Dallas and Philadelphia!  There is true empowerment in this program.

Vertical Gardens: In an area rife with flooding and in need of choices outside of rice farming, these vertical gardens offer 48 meters of gardening space within a 4x1 meter space.

GoPhil first learned about this small yet effective program while staying at the hotel Sojourn Villas in Siem Reap, Cambodia.  Casually noticing some hotel literature regarding a walking tour through the local Treak Village, GP founder Lydia Dean decided to learn more.  What she found was a small business with deep commitments to its local community and a shining example of social enterprise.

HUSK was founded by Fiona and Anthony, the hotel owners -- "For us, running a business in Cambodia went hand in hand with helping the community we had been lucky enough to choose to call home. "

From that first visit until now, Lydia and the GoPhil team have found great joy in finding ways to help HUSK fulfill its missions.  Ingrid Kuegeman is currently overseeing GoPhil's partnership with this great organization, and welcomes questions or comments at any time.
