Strengthening marginalized, low-income families in India to prevent children from ending up in institutional care.
TARA Child Protection & Empowerment opened the doors to a new Outreach Center earlier this year – their first non-residential program focused on prevention.
This groundbreaking approach in India addresses the root causes of why so many children with parents end up in institutionalized care. The center, based in a marginalized community of rural-to-urban migrants in South Delhi, aims to strengthen vulnerable families and keep them together. Offering community-based programs and educational support for children and their families – such as day care facilities, helping families to access government services such as ID cards, education and health services, and crisis intervention – this program makes institutionalization of children the very last resort. The opening of this center represents a monumental shift towards preventative services, and is a testament to TARA’s evolution, openness to learning and commitment to child protection best practices.

It is estimated that nearly one third of all children living in extreme poverty reside in India, which directly correlates to high rates of child trafficking, child labor and exploitation.
