TOIT - Nepal

TOIT  = French word for “shelter.”

WHAT THEY DO
For over a decade TOIT has been providing free education to underprivileged children in heritage site Bhaktapur area of Kathmandu.   Many of the children from the local community come from disadvantaged, uneducated families working in the local brick making factories—the majority of these families have difficulty providing for their children.  TOIT’s main focus is running “Saras Pathashala,” a private school where 100 children receive a high quality education and free meals.  TOIT also sponsors an additional 150 children to attend other private schools in the region.  Believing that parents are the most important elements in a child’s life, TOIT offers community outreach for the parents of the children who attend school.

Saras Pathashala School
The vision for ‘Saras Pathashala is two fold. Firstly, to provide a high quality education for children from financially disadvantaged families irrespective of their race, caste, creed, sex or religion. Secondly, to serve as an example for other schools in providing modern education to vulnerable children.
Apart from common studies in Nepali Culture, Mathematics, Science, English and Art, this unique school includes practical knowledge in recycling, agriculture, pottery, field visit, arts and crafts, weaving cloths, alternative resources and handicraft.  Their curriculum focuses on developing the children’s creative, theoretical and practical skills, going above and beyond what is offered in normal government schools.

In partnership

GoPhil was introduced to TOIT just before the 2015 earthquake.   A vast majority of the children attending TOIT’s school lost homes and loved ones.   When classes finally resumed, most of the students were unable to focus on their studies due to post traumatic stress and hunger.   In July 2015, GoPhil began funding a free lunch program and psychological counseling.  More recently, GoPhil has provided a grant to complete the construction of a science lab and library.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES
The focus of GoPhilanthropic's support includes:
  • Support for free meal program
