{"id":1427,"date":"2016-01-22T23:10:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-22T23:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/gophil\/2016\/01\/22\/helping-to-rebuild-nepal-gophil-successfully-completes-earthbag-house-pilot-in-dolakha-district\/"},"modified":"2019-05-03T20:56:34","modified_gmt":"2019-05-03T20:56:34","slug":"helping-to-rebuild-nepal-gophil-successfully-completes-earthbag-house-pilot-in-dolakha-district","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gophilanthropic.org\/helping-to-rebuild-nepal-gophil-successfully-completes-earthbag-house-pilot-in-dolakha-district\/","title":{"rendered":"Helping to rebuild Nepal&#8211;GoPhil successfully completes Earthbag House pilot in Dolakha district"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>In July 2015, Gophilanthropic was awarded a $33,000 grant from the Mawardi Foundation for post-earthquake rebuilding efforts.\u00a0 After researching and consulting with various organizations involved in rebuilding, GoPhil was introduced to the Ithaka Foundation who were using an innovative earth\/sand bag technique used after the notorious 7.0 earthquake in Haiti.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pIRZWsPB0ac?feature=player_embedded\" width=\"320\" height=\"266\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-thumbnail-src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/pIRZWsPB0ac\/0.jpg\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<p>The earth bag construction involves filling sewing and filling earth bags and using rocks from the old dwellings as the foundation for the new home.\u00a0 Families are involved in the rebuilding themselves as well as other skilled labor from the local village.\u00a0 The earth bag home is plastered and outfitted with other locally sourced materials, has a lifespan of 70+ years and is earthquake safe.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>GoPhil began a pilot earth bag house in December, 2015 in the Dolakha district\u2014 a 5 hour journey east of Kathmandu, known as \u201cGateway to Mt. Everest\u201d and one of the epicenters of the earthquake where 90% of the houses had either collapsed or badly damaged. GoPhil Program Manager Lilu traveled to Dolakha at the beginning and end of the project to monitor and evaluate progress. \u00a0 The pilot house was successfully completed 8 days later.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>GoPhil plans to fund 20 more earth bag houses in same district beginning Feb 1st, 2016.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;
