{"id":4855,"date":"2018-02-20T14:07:08","date_gmt":"2018-02-20T14:07:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gophilanthropic.org\/?p=4855"},"modified":"2019-05-03T20:56:04","modified_gmt":"2019-05-03T20:56:04","slug":"aula-magica-preschool-program-making-big-moves-guatemala-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gophilanthropic.org\/aula-magica-preschool-program-making-big-moves-guatemala-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Aula M\u00e1gica Preschool Program Making Big Moves in Guatemala Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>In the past year GoPhil provided <a href=\"https:\/\/gophilanthropic.org\/partner-programs\/aula-magica\/\">Aula M\u00e1gica<\/a> with their first pilot grant.<\/strong> We are amazed to see the expansion of their preschool program in such a short time and the following results show what a small program &#8211; fueled with passion, motivation and dedicated people &#8211; can do with a leg-up!<\/h3>\n<p>Guatemala is a country where preschool is not mandatory and the distances and the lack of teaching staff make it almost impossible to get off to a great start in first grade. In fact, half of Guatemalan children don\u2019t enter a classroom for the first time until the age of seven, and as a result of almost non-existent preparation for the challenges of attending school, <strong>a whopping 27% of students throughout the country drop out or fail the first grade<\/strong>.\u00a0In partnership with Aula M\u00e1gica, a unique and powerful small NGO in Guatemala, GoPhil hopes to help in painting a different picture.<\/p>\n<p>Aula M\u00e1gica offers children an important boost by providing preschool programs to underserved areas in hard to reach, rural Guatemala &#8211; nearly 300 children to be exact. Through your generous donation, Aula M\u00e1gica has received critically needed support for their local staff salaries. And what a difference that support has made as it is absolutely essential for the program\u2019s growth and future sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>In the past year GoPhil has granted Aula M\u00e1gica their first grant. We are amazed to see the expansion to its preschool program in such a short time. The following results show what can happen when a small program, fueled with passion, motivation and dedicated people can do with a leg-up.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4479\" src=\"https:\/\/gophilanthropic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/school-aula.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gophilanthropic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/school-aula-277x300.jpg 277w, https:\/\/gophilanthropic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/school-aula.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/>With an initial grant of $5,000 made possible by generous GoPhil donors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Aula M\u00e1gica has been able to <strong>keep all 22 of their classrooms up and running for the year<\/strong>, without interruption. This is a first and a huge milestone for them!<\/li>\n<li>Staff members Michael and Sophia traveled to <strong>four potential new project areas deep in rural Guatemala<\/strong> to conduct community assessments to ascertain the need and acceptance of preschool programs there.<\/li>\n<li>Through lots of meetings and engagements, Aula M\u00e1gica has been able to <strong>secure some additional support and funding for the classrooms<\/strong>. This in addition to funds already committed by GoPhil for the next phase of their work, all of which can translate to long term sustainability.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, we just learned that between April and November of last year, those <strong>Aula M\u00e1gica children receiving a nutrition supplement had a 74% reduction in anemia!<\/strong> This is said to be one the highest reduction seen in a rural program.
