Clean Energy Nepal (CEN)

WHAT THEY DO

According to Yale University’s Environment Performance Index (EPI) 2016, Nepal is ranked 149 among 180 countries for their performance on protection of human health and protection of ecosystems. Worsening air quality involve the overuse of vehicles, brick kiln emission, trash burning, forest fires, and rapid urbanization. A study by the Ministry of Population and Environment in 2005 estimated 1600 premature deaths related to air pollution in Kathmandu Valley.

Clean Energy Nepal (CEN) is an organization that has been working with the Government and other stakeholders for the promotion and coordination of clean transportation facilities, policy dialogues and public awareness. CEN’s policy dialogues with the Government have encouraged the launch of Air Quality Monitoring stations around Kathmandu valley. CEN was established as social, educational and investigative organization to aware general public about clean energy resources and to assist the government in achieving its plans of environmental protection, by supporting research, study, discussion and debate and awareness campaigns.

FOCUS OF OUR PARTNERSHIP

GoPhilanthropic felt it was critical to focus on clean air awareness with school children, pedestrians and with traffic police, as they represent the largest portion of the population exposed to air pollution.

Our partnership has focused on the following campaigns:

  • School awareness - increase awareness of school children on air pollution and Air Quality Monitoring (AQM) through selected and trained 15 youth volunteers.
  • Public awareness: organization of rallies, peaceful demonstration program, street drama and meetings with Government personnel, Ministry of Environment, cyclists groups, Transportation Association, Public vehicle drivers and Traffic Police to raise awareness on air pollution.
  • Media awareness and sensitization: trainings on sensitization of media and journalists regarding air pollution.

THEIR VISION: To educate and and build awareness on issues related to climate change, energy and other environmental issues. To work toward reducing air pollution and global warming impacts to natural and human system.
