Less than 8% of the water in Guatemala receives adequate purification treatment and almost no family homes in rural indigenous communities have access to drinkable water. An average of 23% of children seen at ASSADE’s clinics suffer from acute gastroenterocolitis and over 50% from chronic diarrhea. These conditions, easily addressed by access to potable water, create the second highest cause of childhood death in some remote areas of Guatemala. A simple ecological water filter reduces these conditions by 50%.
