Community Health Services for Those Who Need it Most
In 2015 the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank released the alarming statistics that 400 million people across the world lack access to basic health services. In a world where more than 1 billion people are living in extreme poverty (less than $1.25 per day) and 2.2 billion are living on less than $2 per day, the world’s poorest, most marginalized people are the most at risk in accessing health services — one of the most fundamental elements to our natural rights. Support for health services are central to many of our partnerships around the world — from ensuring that school-aged children are in the best condition to learn and grow, to funding clinics in ethnic minority and indigenous communities, and underwriting the salaries of health professionals in schools and shelters. ASSADE began with one woman’s passion for health care. Early on, founder Maria Elena shared this passion with one of her brothers who was a doctor while she was a nurse in the same hospital where he practiced. During the civil war many people were killed, health professionals were targeted—especially those who were helping the poor, including Maria’s brother. Maria built the ASSADE clinic as a legacy to her brother. Aula Mágica has created a model of training, licensing and paying entrepreneurial and community-minded young adults to use pre-recorded interactive programs to teach preschool children in rural areas in their native languages. Centro Maya Servicio Integral provides much needed services to an often forgotten segment of our population…people with disabilities. The service’s efforts are focused on the quality of life for people who have disabilities in the northwest area of Lake Atitlan. Clean Energy Nepal (CEN) is an organization that has been working with the Government and other stakeholders for the promotion and coordination of clean transportation facilities, policy dialogues and public awareness.
