“I have promised myself not to stop fighting for girls until my community stops exchanging girls for cows.”

– Hellen Nkuraiya, Founder & Director at Maji Moto Enkiteng Lepa School

Hellen Nkuriaya, Founder and Director of the Enkiteng Lepa School in Maji Moto, Kenya, continues to do incredible work fighting for girls’ rights to be free from child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM), and to be free to access quality education and other human rights. As a former government teacher, Hellen knows the best way to protect girls is to enroll them in school where they are cared for, educated, and under the protection of the Kenyan government.

Things are going very well at the Enkiteng Lepa School, and Hellen is so proud of how the class 8 students did on their state exams this year. Impressively, each student in the class will be going on to high school in the upcoming school year – an incredible achievement considering the substantial barriers they have overcome to reach this point. Overall, the Enkiteng Lepa School emerged as one of the top five schools in the county, and one student received such a high score on her state exam that she placed among the top ten nationwide!

In other news, we are excited to report that, thanks to generous support from members of our GoPhil community, the Enkiteng Lepa School now has a brand-new washroom for the students! As you can see from these photos, the new washrooms include toilets, showers, and a large water tank.

The washrooms are an important addition to the school, significantly advancing the health and hygiene of the students. The washrooms are now in use and ready for the new school year.

As always, there are more girls in need of support than available spots for them at the Enkiteng Lepa School. In addition to individual student sponsorships, we also work to raise support for the general running costs of the Enkiteng Lepa School, so that it can remain in operation, retain core staff members, and continue to welcome more girls.

The new Enkiteng Lepa school year will officially commence on January 6th, 2020, and we look forward to continuing a strong partnership in the year ahead.
